WINFIELD – A Putnam County man is suing the executor of an estate after he claims a last will and testament was a forgery. On May 17, 2014, Lorene F. Melton died and on Jan. 29, a document purporting to be her last will and testament was recorded in the county, according to a complaint filed April 1 in Putnam Circuit Court.

Blankenship sentenced to year in prison, fined $250K

CHARLESTON – Former Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship has been sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay a $250,000 fine. Blankenship was sentenced April 6 in federal court. U.S. District Judge Irene Berger handed down the maximum sentence of one year in prison for the misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to willfully violate mine safety standards at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County. An explosion there on April 5, 2010, killed 29 miners.

CHARLESTON – A 25-year-old woman is suing Dr. Steven R. Matulis after she claims he sexually assaulted her during a procedure. Charleston Gastroenterology Associates was also named as a defendant in the suit. On Feb. 16, T.W. presented to Charleston Area Medical Center for a colonoscopy procedure to be performed by Matulis and immediately before the procedure, she was administered a short-acting anesthetic Propofol and was rendered unconscious, according to a complaint filed April 5 in Kanawha

'Mr. Social Security' accused of defrauding government of $600M

LEXINGTON, Ky. – An eastern Kentucky attorney who bills himself as “Mr. Social Security” has been charged with defrauding the federal government of more than $600 million. Eric Conn was arrested April 4. In his indictment, unsealed April 5, a federal grand jury found probable cause to believe Conn conspired to rig hundreds of disability claims from 2004 to 2012.
