CHARLESTON – Two former WVU Tech students have gone to court to keep West Virginia University from moving the school from Montgomery to Beckley. Dorothy Phillips and William “Bolts” Willis filed their writ of mandamus Jan. 15 in Kanawha Circuit Court against the WVU Board of Governors.
CHARLESTON – A handful of lawsuits were filed Friday related to 2014’s Elk River Chemical Spill. Saturday, Jan. 9, was the two-year anniversary of the incident that left about 300,000 residents without access to tap water for nine days.
CHARLESTON – Former U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin has filed pre-candidacy papers to run for governor of West Virginia. Goodwin filed the papers Friday, less than a week after said he was stepping down as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia. Goodwin, a Democrat, will be running against billionaire Jim Justice and state Senate Minority Leader Jeff Kessler. State Senate President Bill Cole is the lone Republican in the race right now.
CHARLESTON – A Scott Depot woman is suing the Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital over claims that a Kanawha County woman's death could have been prevented.
FAYETTEVILLE – A Kanawha County woman is demanding a trial by jury for injuries sustained in a convenience store, alleging the unsafe environment and negligence caused her prolonged physical and mental pain.
CHARLESTON – A Charleston law firm seems to be making a Christmas tradition of helping dogs find homes. A week before Christmas, The West Law Firm sponsored the adoption of 24 dogs at the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.
WILLIAMSON – A lawsuit has been filed by the former Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney over the beating of an 18-year-old in downtown Williamson last December. Dawson Isom, by his guardian and next friend, David Isom, alleges Gary Rash and Erik Rash, father and son, of infliction of mental and physical distress; conspiracy to inflict mental and physical distress on Dawson Isom; loss of consortium and companionship; and tort of outrage, according to the complaint filed Dec. 18 in Mingo Circuit

CHARLESTON – Lera VanMeter, one of the candidates for Kanawha County family court judge, wants to make sure children don't get lost in the shuffle if she is nominated to the bench. VanMeter, who has been practicing family law for 21 years, said the interests of children involved in family law are very important to her and she wants to make sure those interests are protected. "I want to make sure the children are on the forefront," VanMeter said.
